Once again, the "powers that be" (your elected representatives) have felt that you need babysitting. Yet another attempt has been made to convert the United States of America into a totalitarian state. Send a letter to your representatives NOW. Email does not work as well unless they are literally flooded with them. It is best to mail your letters with a return receipt. Let them know you mean business.
The Real ID Act was attached to a bill for military support and tsunami relief as a way to get representatives to approve the bill. Deceit seems to be the only way that a bill like this would pass.
The bill requires that everyone in the United States will have to have a national ID card that meets federal guidelines if an American intends to travel by airline, open a bank account, collect social security benefits or use just about any other government service. States, of course will have the final say in what guidelines they set for issuing drivers licenses, since this is the means that the federal government intends to use to enact the federal ID program. It is important to notify your state representatives of your opposition to such an ID program. Politicians will try to use the "if you don't have anything to hide" rhetoric commonly used by those who wish to increase government control over "We the People", but we must all resist.
Maine is the first state to refuse to abide by these federal guidelines with both houses passing a resolution stating that Maine would not comply with the digital requirements of the Real ID Act. Idaho recently joined Maine in refusing to abide by the Real ID Act. This just goes to show that the states can and should deny the federal government's unconstitutional requirement. The states have the ultimate authority in determining what they will require for a driver's license or identification card, and it is usually through bribery from the federal government that states pass federal requirements, such as raising the legal drinking age to 21 from 18 by threatening to cut off federal highways funds.
It is imperative that you contact your state representative to express your concerns. ACT NOW. The federal law is to take effect May of 2008. If enough states disapprove of the Real ID Act, then the federal government will have no power with this law.
Follow this link to a sample letter that you may use to write to your state levels representatives. They should know that federal law does not supersede state law which is contrary to what federal representative claim.

Leaders of a U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs panel joined a chorus of outsiders, including many state government officials, who have questioned the costs and privacy implications of the congressionally mandated shift to identification cards that must adhere to a bevy of national standards.
