The Republican Politicians

The Republican Party was originally founded as an abolitionist party to free the slaves. They used to be the party that stood for smaller government and less tax. They were that party for less government intrusion into private business. They no longer stick to these ideals. They do occassionally stand against a higher tax, but many of the taxes that are in place now could not have happened without Republican support. The Republican party has an agenda and they intend to use government force to bring it about.

Republicans do support government interference in matters that they consider to be immoral. For example, they believe that it is OK to tell adults who they may have sex with or what they may ingest. They are responsible for the "War On Drugs", the biggest most costly failure of a drug program in American history. Even the founder of the "D.A.R.E" program has withdrawn in participating in the program that he founded because it does not work.

The argument that they use is that if people were permitted to do as they please, for example take drugs or have sex with prostitutes, society will degrade. In all actuality just the opposite would occur. If people were not only permitted (there's that word again) to do as they please and also held accountable for their actions, then we would have a better society. Funds that are now spent in an effort to protect people from themselves and their sins, would be available to fight the real criminals. We often hear about lack of space in our prisons yet hundreds of thousands of these spaces are filled with Criminals of victimless crime. This is all done with Republican politician support.

The fabrication...

The biggest myth perpetrated by the Republican party is that Republicans stand for smaller government. The Republican party is responsible for one of the biggest growths in government through the "War on Drugs" that this government has ever experienced. It has permitted government intrusion into our private bank accounts, permitted seizure of property without a trial or conviction, and made it easier for police to invade a home without proper notification.

The Republican Party, in a desperate attempt at clinging to the majority that it has gained in the House of Representatives, has started laying the blame for losing campaigns on the Libertarian Party. This is a much smaller party that also professes some of the things that the Republican Party does. One of the arguments is that Conservatives who would have voted for a Republican instead voted for the Libertarian. The Libertarian Party is becoming a very big concern to the Republican Party, so much so that in some states like Washington, they have started posting derogatory remarks on their state party web site. In Washington, the State differentiates between "major" and "minor" party status. To qualify for "major party status", a party has to garner 5% of the vote in a statewide race such as governor or state auditor. The Libertarian party qualified for this "major party status" in the year 2000 by garnering over 5% in three statewide races. Since then, the Republican Party has started publically mimicking much of what the Libertarian party has to say and turned up the heat on the blame game.

The truth of the matter...

Although, for some reason, the Republican Party wants us to believe that in those races in which a Libertarian ran and garnered more than the margin between the Republican and Democrat and the Democrat won, the Republican would have won if there were no Libertarian in the race is exactly opposite the truth. The fact is, Republican supporters are less likely to vote for third party candidates than independents or Democrats. The libertarian Party has gained support of some conservatives who realize that the Libertarian Party is more likely to stick to some of the conservative values that have fallen by the wayside with the Republican Party.

The perfect case for this is the Pierce County Washington race for the 3rd District County Council seat in 2000. There were no Republicans in the race. It was a two way race between a Libertarian and a Democrat and the Democrats stood to win the majority from the Republicans on the seven member County Council. The Democrat, Kevin Wimsett, was a 26 year old history teacher who had no managerial experience whatsoever. Of the ten public functions that he was invited to attend with his opponents, he appeared for only one of them, the tenth being an invitation to debate his Libertarian opponent.

The Libertarian candidate, Michael Hamilton, was a 38 year old former small business owner who also had managerial experience in the corporate world. He appeared for all ten of the public functions that he was invited to attend. It was broadly published that this Libertarian candidate would never support a tax increase and would never support the further removal of more property rights, yet he garnered only 29% of the vote. The Republicans either didn't vote, or voted for the Democrat for fear of allowing a third party win a partisan race.

Take a look at the amount of money spent in the campaigns of the 2nd District, which had a Republican and a Democrat in the race, compared to the 3rd District with only a Libertarian to run against the Democrat. In the 2nd District Calvin Goings, Democrat, spent $66,264 against the Republican Kathy Farris' $858. (That's no typo.)

In the 3rd District the Libertarian, Michael Hamilton, spent $19,496 against the Democrat Kevin Wimsett's $27,430. Yet in the 2nd District, the Republican garnered 39%, 10% more than the Libertarian in the 3rd District. Obviously Republicans are less likely to vote for third party candidates, even when they face losing the majority to the Democrats, which they did. In the first year after this election, there have already been increased taxes that have passed with votes along party lines.

If the REpublicans would simply stick to the ideals earlier professed, that is less taxes, smaller governmen and less intrusion into the work place, and also give up the moral dictatorship, they would not only take, but keep the majority in the United States and government would shrink. The problem, now, is Deomcrats and Republicans have been working together for so long, that the party name by a candidate's name means nothing anymore. If more government start to pass Instant Run-off Voting like Pierce County Washington did in 2006, we will see many more vote being cast for thrid parties, because people will not feel they are wasting a vote. This scares the dickens out of Republicans and Democrats alike.
